I figured I’d start here because Harry Potter is the easiest thing in the world to recommend and to talk about.
I’m not going to sit here and tell you to buy the Harry Potter books (I mean, here’s a link if you want to get started reading the Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone). Anyone who has read the book already has an opinion on it and everyone who has refused to read the series is dead to me.
Jk, my own boyfriend stopped after the third book.
However, I do want to say this:
The Harry Potter fandom saved my life. Some of my best friendships started out as comments about the series, headcanons, or arguements about who belongs in what house.
The very first fanfic I ever read was from the Harry Potter fandom. My mother and I had a lot of disconnect when it came to “The Talk” and she had OPINIONS about sex ed in school. So, while there were many times I was extreemly confused while reading fics that involved sex, there was a massive sense of support in the comunity when it came to teaching those who didn’t know a condom from a ballon.
All of this to say that I’ve learned two very important things from the Harry Potter series, neither of which were actually in the book.
The first is that you should always use lube.
The second is that being part of a fandom, a community drawn together by the joys of fiction and magic refusing to accept what’s cannon, is the best thing that ever happened to me.
So pick up a book, join a fandom, and for the love of god read Harry Potter.
